Myers-Briggs, anyone? Comparing introverts and extroverts is a popular trend for many of us trying to improve personal relationships. Did you know it can be applied to fundraising as well?
Brian Saber, President of Asking Matters, joined the NAYDO webinar series to dispel myths about introverts–and reveal how they offer a hidden edge in fundraising.
In his presentation, “Fundraising for Introverts,” Saber takes us on a fascinating journey to learn more about what makes different personality types tick and how to engage them in fundraising.
Here are the highlights:
Introverts Are Wired Differently
According to Saber, “No one ever listened themselves out of a gift.” Extroverts tend to let it all out from the beginning, but a pause is needed after requesting a donation.
This is part of the reason why introverts and extroverts are more effective in fundraising when paired together. One personality type may come on strong, while the other knows when to back off.
Saber separates these personality types into four types of fundraisers:
- Go-Getters
These fundraisers are high-energy, motivated, and ambitious in setting goals. They tend to be skilled at engaging donors and inspiring others. - Kindred Spirits
These individuals connect easily with others, and are successful in fundraising due to their sincerity and passion for the mission. - Mission Controllers
Organized and detailed, these fundraisers are the managers, completing complex campaigns with precision. - Rainmakers
Known for charisma and the art of persuasion, these fundraisers are highly skilled, strategic, and successful in reaching large goals.
Communicating with Introverted Donors Effectively
Introverted donors may not enjoy attending events. “Rest assured that most of the donors who come to fundraising events are extroverts,” says Saber. “Find a way to make introverts more comfortable.”
Build productive relationships with introverted donors by:
- Engaging one-to-one
- Offering virtual events
- Creating more comfortable environments
- Breaking down discussions into smaller groups
- Communicating via email or messaging, or offering written materials
Introverts in the fundraising space often communicate or respond at a different pace, so communicate your objectives clearly and concisely during any type of giving discussion.
