We lost a friend and valued partner

By July 16, 2012 No Comments

I was deeply saddened Friday morning to learn that Jim Lombard, the CEO of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham—our hometown Y—lost his long, hard-fought battle. He will certainly be missed by his friends, family, colleagues and the community at large. I knew Jim in his role as the leader of our YMCA. I know his life involved more than the YMCA, but his work in that capacity alone was truly significant.

Under Jim’s leadership, the Birmingham YMCA has made tremendous strides. They boldly acquired a chain of wellness centers which allowed them to dramatically expand their footprint into four new communities. The Y built the beautiful downtown youth center to reach the underserved in our inner city. They opened full-service facilities in both Alabaster and Hoover. And finally, Jim guided the association as they undertook a major capital campaign and massive renovation of the venerable Shades Valley YMCA, which is Daxko’s “neighborhood” YMCA.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim’s family, friends, and the staff and volunteers of the Birmingham YMCA. Although he was taken too young, his impact will be felt for decades in our Y and our community.

From all of us at Daxko, we’ll miss you Jim!
